Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
