Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
