The United States Proposes a Decade and a Half of Protection Commitments, States President Zelenskyy.

Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukraine's leader Zelenskyy has revealed that the US administration has outlined a proposed peace plan encompassing protection pledges for his nation spanning a period of a decade and a half.

Key Aspects of the Plan

President Zelenskyy stated that during significant talks with American leader Donald Trump, he had requested long-term defense assurances for as long as half a century. Nonetheless, the outlined plan foresees a reduced assurance of one and a half decades from America.

It is not clear what these assurances would take, but the president has been advocating for "collective security assurances, modeled on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's core tenet that aggression towards any member should be seen as an act of war against every member.

Progress on Peace Talks

Zelenskyy has said, US security guarantees for his country under the revised settlement framework have been completely settled, although the US President offered a more guarded assessment, estimating the agreement at more like ninety-five percent.

Both leaders said that progress had been made during the Florida talks. The US President, nevertheless, warned that there were a couple of challenging remaining points, including over territory.

Conditions for Russian Talks

Separately, the Ukrainian President also told journalists that a direct engagement with Moscow would be possible after the Washington and its European partners agreed on a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to conclude the conflict.

This statement comes following Donald Trump stated publicly that he thought a meeting involving three parties between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen once the timing is appropriate.

Historical Context

The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have not held direct talks since December 2019. That previous engagement, brokered by the the presidents of France and chancellor of Germany, was intended to renew efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

In a later instance, in May 2025, the Russian president opted not to travel to Istanbul for discussions with Zelenskyy, turning down a bold proposal to talk about ending the war in Turkey.

Key Sticking Points

A key point of contention continues to be the status of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. President Trump stated that a plan to turn the area, which is predominantly held by Moscow's forces, into a demilitarised zone continues to be a topic of debate.

Trump further commented that it will be known within weeks if the conflict can be concluded.

The involved parties have underscored that the protracted diplomatic process would carry on as they strive for a durable settlement to the protracted conflict.
